The smell of freshly baked bread and pastries is filling the air at Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave) with the arrival of ALF Bakery, the debut bakery from industry veteran Amadou Ly.

Ly has worked at some of the finest kitchens in New York City as a pastry chef and chocolatier, including Jean-Georges, Insieme, and All Good Things, to name a few. He went on to work at the iconic Arcade Bakery in TriBeCa, where he perfected his skills under the tutelage of Roger Gural for five years before the bakery closed in 2019.

Visitors to ALF Bakery will find an assortment of freshly baked breads, viennoiserie (French yeast-leavened dough), pastries, and sandwiches. The bakery specializes in items that utilize the process of lamination - dough that has been made with many layers of flour and butter, creating light and flaky textures.

The opening menu features several traditional style of breads (baguettes, epi, sourdough loaves, miche), croissants (with almonds and chocolate, pain au chocolat) and pastries (chocolate babka with ganache made from scratch, pain perdu). Another specialty item being offered is Flan du boulanger - a rustic French tart made with a flan (light egg custard) filling in puff pastry.

Sandwiches, including ham and cheese with butter on baguette, Tunisian tuna served open-face on sourdough, and chicken with roast peppers on focaccia, are also available.

ALF bake shop is located on the lower “Chelsea Local” level of the market. The bakery is currently open Wednesday - Sunday from 9am to 6pm with plans to expand days of operation in the future.
