Around Town - Body Paint Events, Pride Flights, Juneteenth, Cookbooks, Bastid's BBQ Party & more

Human Connection Arts, known for its models dressed only in body paint, is announcing its roster of Summer Events, including an appearance at the Museum Mile at the Guggenheim on June 18th, at the ChaShaMa Gala on June 20th and the Sugar Hill Arts Festival in Harlem on June 21. Those wishing to get painted can apply here. The group will also be hosting several events in the Catskills this summer.

Indian restaurant SONA in Flatiron will be hosting Drag Brunch on Saturday June 1 with Bollywood icons Muni and Sheila. There will be bottomless mimosas, brunch bites and beats by DJ Varoon.

On Sunday June 2nd, Noi Due Cafe will be celebrating the Israeli Day Parade with a special menu honoring the Hebrew festival of Shavout with specials such as spinach and potato burekas, along with assorted quiches and crepes.

As Pride Month kicks off, TALEA’s taprooms will be offering a Pride Flight displaying the female run brewery’s most colorful beers. Each pride flight purchased at the West Village taproom from June 1-9 will be accompanied by a Pride cupcake from Baked by Melissa with a portion of proceeds going to the LGBT Center in the WV neighborhood.

In honor of Juneteenth, Pier 57 will be partnering with Blacklist NYC to host a Juneteenth Buy Black Market on Saturday, June 15. Featuring a variety of artists, vendors, and makers, the goal of the Buy Black Marketplace is to feature, support, and otherwise elevate artists and makers of color in New York. The pop-up market is free to attend and will take place from 1:00 – 6:00 pm in Pier 57’s Living Room space and visitors can RSVP here.

Also, to commemorate Juneteenth, and to celebrate the work of Black artists Vince Fraser and Ursula Rucker, ARTECHOUSE will open the space free of charge on Wednesday, June 19 from 10am-9pm. The art space will offer activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy on-site, including a special “Sorrel Punch” cocktail – inspired by the tradition of celebrating with red food and drinks on Juneteenth – made with hibiscus and chai from West Africa. Acclaimed food writer and former Food & Wine magazine restaurant editor Khushbu Shah is celebrating the June 4th release of her debut cookbook AMRIKAN: 125 Recipes from the Indian American Diaspora with a series of special events across New York City from June 2nd through June 8th. They include Sunday, 6/2, 2:00pm: Indian High Tea w/ Kolkata Chai Co. at INDAY Williamsburg; Tuesday, 6/4, 6:30pm: Talk and Tasting with Khushbu Shah and Sohla el Waylly at The Platform by The James Beard Foundation; Wednesday June 5, 6:00pm: Indian Pizza Party at Lord’s; Friday, 6/7, 7:00pm: Essex Market signing + talk w/ Deb Perelman of The Smitten Kitchen + bites from Dhamaka at Essex Market; Saturday, 6/8, 9:00am: AMRIKAN x Win Son Bakery Collab @ Win Son Bakery; and Saturday 6/8, 1:00pm: Malai Ice Cream Party and Cookbook Signing at the Malai Flagship Store in Brooklyn.

Separately, pre-orders are now available for a new cookbook by Asian-American pastry chef (previously of the James Beard Award-nominated restaurant Kimika) and television personality Clarice Lam. Her debut cookbook called Breaking Bao: 88 Bakes and Snacks from Asia and Beyond will be officially released on October 22, 2024 [$40, Chronicle Books]. It is described as a love letter to Asian-American baking and snacks rooted in Clarice’s personal journey of self-discovery and the transformative power of embracing one’s heritage.

And finally, DJ Skratch Bastid is back for his annual Bastid’s BBQ Party at The Seaport on June 8th and 9th. Skratch Bastid, born Paul Murphy, rose to prominence in North America through the DJ battle circuit in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He became especially noted for his crowd-pleasing routines that blended musicality and showmanship. Since 2010, he has hosted daytime block-party style events in various cities called Bastid's BBQ and is returning to The Seaport to bring the entertainment to New York for not just one day, but for two! Free and open to the public, the event promises good BBQ and hip hop music on the water’s edge. DJ @skratchbastid and friends will keep the energy high, spinning all afternoon long and into the night. The event will take place on Saturday, June 8th, and Sunday, June 9th, from 3-10pm. RSVP here
