Around Town - Pier 57 Opens, Honoring Our Oldest Restaurants, Easter Egg Hunting, April Fools Comedy

The ground floor of Pier 57 in Hudson River Park will officially open to the public on Saturday, April 1, marking the rebirth of the maritime facility as a vibrant, year-round culinary, cultural, and educational destination for NYC locals and visitors alike. The space includes Market 57, a new food hall anchored by the James Beard Foundation (JBF), as well as a series of community and open spaces with programming to foster learning and discovery, all made possible by the support of Google. Market 57 also includes Good To Go by JBF, an incubator for fast-casual concepts.

The James Beard Foundation is also presenting the Century Club: A Tribute to New York’s Oldest Restaurants. The event is being held on Monday, April 10 is honoring Gage & Tollner, Fraunces Tavern, Grand Central Oyster Bar and Russ & Daughters with a one-night-only affair at the James Beard Foundation's brand new space at Pier 57. A five-course feast will celebrate the evolution and longevity of the city's longest-standing institutions. $175-$225 pp, 7pm.

The Easter Egg Hunt is on at Queens County Farm Museum will be held on Sunday, April 2nd and on April 8th. Families can hop on over to the most celebrated egg hunt in New York City for outdoor games, a farm-wide scavenger hunt, hayrides, food vendors, photos with Whiskers the Bunny and so much more. The Barnyard Egg Hunt will be held from 11am-4pn both days. BYOB (bring your own basket) is encouraged. Admission is $15. Free for ages 0-1 years old.

Bowery, the largest US pesticide-free, vertical farming company, and sweetgreen are teaming up for a new Bowery Bowl featuring Bowery Spring Mix, cucumber, roasted sweet potato, spicy broccoli, raw carrots, sunflower seeds, roasted chicken, shaved parmesan, and a lime cilantro jalapeno vinaigrette. The bowl is being offered at 45 sweetgreen locations in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Bowery is backed by tech and agriculture industry leaders as well as individuals including Jeff Wilke, Tom Colicchio, José Andrés, and David Barber of Blue Hill.

The April Fools Comedy Festival, presented by Marquee Concerts on Saturday, will be held April 1st at the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden. The festival features a lineup of the country's best comedians including Sommore, Bruce Bruce, Lavell Crawford, Arnez J, Talent the Comedian, and Ray Dejon for an unforgettable night filled with laughs. Licorería Limantour, voted North America’s Best Bar by 50 Best, is popping up at Fandi Mata’s Little Oaxaca, on Friday, March 31st, and Saturday, April 1st. The Mexico City drinking destination will be bringing its expert team, led by Eduardo Nava and Daniel Gonzale, to New York locals and Brooklyn imbibers, from 6pm-12am on both nights. Cocktails include the Margarita Al Pastor with Tequila Mijenta Blanco, Cointreau, lime juice, basil and mint “taco mix,” garnished with a pineapple triangle and coriander-salt rim. 74 Bayard St, Brooklyn.

La Pulperia is celebrating National Empanada Day on Saturday, April 8th with a free empanada—choice of beef or corn & cheese—with the order of a cocktail. Please note that this deal will not be valid during happy hour. Drinks include the Upscale Margarita with Aldez Tequila, Reposado, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, with a salt rim; and The Mean Julep with whiskey, fresh lime juice, chile Morita syrup, mint, and 24K golden flakes, smoked.

The 2023 Jeff Michner BBQ Benefit hosted by Michael Symon will be held at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens on April 29th. The all-day “swine around” benefit will feature more than 30 pitmasters and chefs, including James Beard Award-winning chef Rodney Scott (Rodney Scott BBQ, Alabama), Bill Durney (Hometown BBQ, Brooklyn), BBQ Hall of Famer Tuffy Stone (Cool Smoke BBQ, Virginia), Chris Lilly (Big Bob Gibson BBQ, Alabama), Amy Mills (17th Street BBQ, Illinois) and more. The event honors Pig Beach Executive Chef Jeff Mincher who passed away suddenly at the age of 36. Proceeds will benefit the Jeff Michner Foundation, which supports families managing loss and grief and provides scholarships to graduating high school students with a love for cooking and golf - two of Jeff’s biggest passions in life.
