The Whitney Museum of American Art is coming to the Bronx for a special artmaking project in honor of the 2024 Whitney Biennial at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) on Saturday, June 29 from 11 am–2 pm. Artists of all ages are welcome to join us in NYBG’s Azalea Garden with roaming tour guides and to create watercolor landscapes and botanical illustrations, drawing inspiration from the scenic surroundings and artist Joseph Stella's stunning piece from the Whitney’s collection, Mixed Flowers with Hydrangea (1919). It’s part of “Whitney On The Rails,” the Museum’s partnership with the MTA to bring art to subway stations and cultural institutions via easily accessible public transportation. The Garden is accessible by both subway and Metro-North.

Separately, the Whitney Museum of American Art is teaming up with the Edward Hopper House Museum to celebrate the birthday of iconic artist and avid cyclist Edward Hopper with the second annual Whitney Hopper Ride. This approximately 60-mile round trip bike ride from Manhattan’s Meatpacking District to Hopper’s birthplace of Nyack, New York, and back will take place July 20, 2024, close to what would have been Edward Hopper’s 142nd birthday on July 22.

Tishan Hsu, a pioneer of the digital art movement, examines transformative digital advances with two pieces of art now on display on the High Line. For the High Line, Hsu presents car-grass-screen-2 and car-body-screen-2, two biomorphic forms constructed out of resin-wrapped foam. The cars’ shapes, with their soft edges and curved surfaces, appear entirely organic but for their glitching, screen-like skins. In the skin of car-grass-screen-2, Hsu includes a scannable QR code, which directly connects the sculptural form to both the virtual and physical realm.

Until next time, we'll be seeing you Around Town
