Black Seed Bagels Does Pizza
February 15, 2021, 6:45.31 pm ET
What do you get when you combine dough that's fermented for 36 hours, stone ground flour from Wild Hive Farm in Hudson Valley and a 100-year-old sourdough starter - Black Seed Pizza - from the bagel folks who are known above and beyond. The sauce is made using certified organic Bianco DiNapoli San Marzano-style tomatoes from California.
For now the pizzas are being sold out of their East Village location (176 First Ave) where Chef Bobby Hellen is taking over the kitchen for part of the day to create a series of custom Sicilian-style pan pies, both square and round. The founding partners of Black Seed (Noah Bernamoff, Matt Kliegman, and Dianna Daoheung) have been friends with the former GG's chef for many years, and are "thrilled" to collaborate with him to utilize their existing shop and beloved wood-fired oven in this way. Black Seed Pizza is also more than just a "virtual concept" launched during the pandemic. It will be a full-fledged, standalone business alongside the bagel operation, poised to grow and potentially operate out of more Black Seed locations with wood-fired ovens.
Here's a look a some of the creations:
Cheese Pie - Mozzarella blend, tomato, grana padano, pecorino romano & fresh basil (add Pepperoni)
Tomato Pie - Tomato sauce, pecorino romano & garlic (add Anchovy)
White Pie - Fresh mozzarella, ricotta, garlic, oregano, grana padano, pecorino, sweet onion & chili crunch
Green Pie - Marinated kale, pesto, fresh mozzarella, scamorza, grana padano, pecorino, garlic, artichoke & pickled pepper
Bob's Pie - Sopressata, mozzarella blend, grana padano, pecorino, tomato sauce, red onion, castelvetrano olive, banana pepper, oregano & homemade chimichurri
Other add-ons include Castlevetrano olives, artichoke, pesto, chimichurri, chili crunch, pickled peppers and more. Also on the menu, an Antipasto Salad and Everything Spice Cheesy Bread with tomoato dipping sauce, in a nod to Black Seed Bagels.
The pizza will be available to be ordered for pickup (at 176 First Ave) and delivery to the surrounding area through Black Seed Pizza's own ordering site (www.blackseedpizza.com), and also via third party delivery platforms including DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats. The shop will operate open nightly, seven days a week, Sunday - Thursday from 4pm - 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 4pm - 11pm.
