George Motz - part chef, television personality and historian - is adding some burger muscle to New York City’s restaurant scene with the opening of Hamburger America. The restaurant located at 51 MacDougal Street has all of the trappings of a classic luncheonette, with retro stainless-steel stools with bright yellow cushions and signs above the counter offering everything from pie and grilled cheese sandwiches to egg creams, and what Motz is truly known for, his classic smash burgers.
George Motz gets his burger prowess from his historical expertise, including his documentary, “Hamburger America,” celebrating the best burgers in the country and the people behind them. The documentary kicked off Motz’s love affair with the burger that now extends to 4 books, 3 TV shows and the opening of Hamburger America which aims to provide the perfect representation of a classic American burger.
All of the beef is supplied from Schweid and Sons, a fourth-generation purveyor of fine meats, that got its start from Harry Schweid in the late 1800s who sold high quality meats to restaurants on the Lower East Side.
The meat can be found in George Motz’s Fried Onion Burger served with American cheese and The Classic Smash Burger topped with diced onion, dill pickle, mustard and cheese on a toasted bun. Both are available as single and double patties. What may be more surprising is the price. At $7.25 for a single, it is less than you can expect to spend for a Quarter Pounder with cheese at McDonald’s in the city. The burgers are available with a side of shoestring fries.
Diners will also find a Hot Ham Sandwich on the menu made with thinly sliced warm ham and melted Swiss cheese on a toasted bun. There’s even a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich. Beverages include Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade, Yoo-Hoo and Miller High Life.
