Is this one of the best chicken sandwiches in New York City?
December 9, 2020, 12:37.36 am ET
We don't generally glom on to new places. OK. Yes, we do. But only when the have some promise. Double Chicken Please on the Lower East Side is plenty pleasing. It starts with a sexy cocktail bar and lush seating, and genuinely gracious hosts. GN Chan and Faye Chen began with a road trip pop-up cocktail experience which morphed into this new brick-and-mortar concept.
The cocktails get a front row seat in the new joint. But unlike catchy names these drinks are numbered and are poured from taps behind the bar. But that doesn't make them any less tasty! We loved the #6 a mix of llegal Joven Mezcal, Corona, tomato, yuzu, mango and jalapeno. Then there's the #1 with Bacardi Lime Rum, Montenegro, cold brew coffee, apricot and tonic. Up to a dozen or so drinks can be offered at any given time.
Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich
Cocktails during the pandemic must come with food to eat and that's where the chicken sandwiches come into play. Our favorite - and what might just be one of the best chicken sandwich in the city at the moment - is the one called Hot Honey. It's a crispy deep-fried chicken cutlet served on a brioche bun with an addictive thai basil buttermilk sauce. We could have easily scoffed down two or three of these babies.
Salted Duck Egg Yolk Chicken Sandwich
Looking for a bit more funk, try the Salted Duck Egg Yolk chicken sandwich with shrimp. But we'll warn you, it's kind of an acquired taste. Other offerings include a Tofu sandwich with sesame and peanut butter, greenmarket salad and 5 spice sweet potato chips. For dessert, there's the Le Big Mac, an almond macaron with choco ice cream, yuzu and mochi.
Double Chicken Please is located at 115 Allen St, New York, NY
