New York City Mayor Eric Adams calls the Time Square Ball Drop, the city’s Super Bowl. And the city is beefing up security to prepare for it by dispatching canine units, police on horseback, drones, helicopters, boats and aviation units.
While city officials say there have been “no specific credible threats,” thousands of uniformed officers, including 631 officers that just graduated, will be deployed along with special operations counterterrorism units.
For those wishing to attend the festivities, there are no backpacks, no duffel bags, large packages or alcohol allowed. The Mayor also warned pro-Palestinian protesters who disrupted the Rockefeller Center tree lighting that such actions won’t be tolerated.
“We have witnessed that there's a small number of people who are trying to embed themselves in some of the protests and bring about disruption. It's not going to be tolerated,” Said Adams. “You break the law, you're going to have to deal with the New York City police.”
Mayor Adams says the city’s entire Intel team will continue monitoring all the usual chatter and while there are no specific threats, as we saw last year, you don't have to have a specific threat to get a threat, adding, we're going to be ready to respond to any potential threat.
