From the folks behind such culinary concepts as Kyma and Friedman’s comes Nizuc, a sprawling new restaurant at Hudson Yards (485 10th Ave and 37th St) inspired by the flavors of Mexico City.

Chef Daniel Mendoza (ATLA, Aska, and Eleven Madison Park) captures the spirit of Mexico with dishes such as Carpaccio De Pulpo with salsa veracruzana; Conchas Con Chorizo with Manila clams in saffron broth; and Cacahuazintle Chowder, a riff on chowder and pozole made with cacahuazintle heirloom white corn.

A dedicated Taco section brings Rib Eye Gringa, a Mexico City specialty where Chef Mendoza is from, made with braised Rib Eye steak, Caramelo flour tortilla, queso chihuahua, salsa taquera, and cilantro; and Flor De Calabaza with zucchini blossom, refried beans, queso Oaxaca, pickled onions, and salsa roja.

Other highlights include Pescado A Las Brazas with grilled branzino, chambray onions, pewee potatoes, radishes, and salsa verde; Pollo Con Mole with Yellow Bell Farm chicken, mole rojo, and verdolaga salad; Hongos Con Pipian Verde with Matsutake mushroom, hoja santa pipian, pear onions, sorrel, and more.

For a sweet finish there is Espresso Kahlua Flan, Tres Leches de Coco cake, and Natilla de Chocolate with berries, and Marie cookie crumbles.

Nizuc’s approachable menu emphasizes sustainability and top-quality ingredients from local New York farmers and producers such as Greenpoint Lobster Fish & Co and Yellow Bell Farms, as well as house-made organic tortillas using Sobre Masa.

The cocktail menu also celebrates Mexico City culture with traditional beverages, such as Agua Frescas in flavors like Watermelon, Hibiscus, and Pineapple Jalapeno; classical and creative riffs of Palomas, Margaritas, and Micheladas; and wine available by the glass.

The space boasts bright coastal colors contrasted by natural wood and earth tones throughout. Guests are immediately transported upon entrance through a cactus garden, which leads to a stylish wrap-around wooden bar. The open chef’s kitchen is lined with emerald green handcrafted tile, which ties in nicely with the terracotta pendant light fixtures spread throughout the dining room. In the evenings, the space transforms into a lively nightspot with a special DJ series.

Nizuc will be open for dinner Tuesday-Thursday, 5PM-10PM, Friday-Saturday, 5PM-11PM, and Sunday, 5PM-10PM. Reservations are available via Resy and OpenTable. For more information, visit nizucnyc.com.
