Places to Celebrate Diwali in NYC Nov 12-15

Known as the Hindu Festival of lights, Diwali is celebrated each year at this time. In Indian culture it is the symbol of “good over evil.” Here are a few restaurants in New York City where you can join in on the celebration.

At stylish Sona in the Flatiron District, guests will find dishes for sharing such as Kerela Prawns Curry with raw mango sauce, and kerala spices; and Aloo Gobi Mutter with sauteed cauliflower, potato, fresh green peas, and roasted cumin. The dishes are accompanied by Malabar Paratha with sliced onions, pickled lemon, and spicy chili. The featured cocktail is a mix of Rose Negroni of Empress elderflower rose gin, luxardo bitters, dry vermouth and garnished with an orange twist.

Chef Paramjeet Bombra of newly opened Gulaabo in the Theater District is celebrating Diwali with a special menu, include a Chaat Platter, assorted Indian street food snacks including Samosa, Aloo Tikki, and Dahi Bhalla; Kebab Platter, assorted grilled kebabs including Murgh Tikka (Chicken), Jhinga (Prawn), Tawa Macchi (Red Snapper), and Lamb Seekh; and Diwali Special Thali featuring Butter Chicken and Goat Curry, Dal Dhaba, Kadhi Pakora, Raita, Naan or Roti, and Pulao. A special cocktail called Kesari is also being offered featuring saffron-infused rum, fresh almond milk, vanilla-cardamom syrup, and grapefruit liqueur.

Baar Baaris offering a special 3 course prix-fixe menu the Festival of Lights and live entertainment. Choices include Potato Tikki Chat (V) white pea pagoda, yogurt mousse, and kale pakoda; Lamb Gilafi Seekh bell pepper crust, and hemp seed chutney; Paneer Pollichattu cooked in banana leaf with shallot coconut masala; and a Rose Cookie with cardamom, pistachio and saffron; among others. Baar Baar is also offering a Diwali party during brunch service with AYCE stations, live DJ set and other entertainment for $45 per person + cash bar.
