Places to Celebrate Lunar New Year in NYC

With the Chinese New Year quickly approaching on February 10th, here are some places to celebrate the Year of the dragon in style!

Philippe by Philippe Chow unleashes the dragon for a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration. On Saturday, February 10th, both Philippe locations (Meatpacking and Upper East Side) have planned lively celebrations featuring captivating live dragon dance performances. The first showing will be at 7:30pm in Meatpacking and 9:00pm on the Upper East Side. Guests will be able to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere as they savor the exquisite Beijing-inspired cuisine perfect for celebrating the new year ahead. For $95pp, opt for the family-style tasting experience where diners will receive a variety of signature appetizers, entrees, a whole Peking duck (per 6 guests), side dishes, fruit, and sorbet.

Immerse yourself in an authentic, regal Chinese Spring Festival this year at Chef Guo where you will find an intimate imperial garden, set beneath the branches of a faux ginkgo tree adorned with warm glowing lanterns. Enjoy celebratory music, festive decorations, and a small gift, bringing good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year. The 10-course menu for $298 per person features dishes such as Poem of the Spring, a sampler of small bites; Hall of Gold & Jade with tofu, abalone, and scallop soup; Bi Feng Tang Sea Bass with Black Vinegar representing prosperity and longevity; and Season of Bumper Harvest, a traditional dish symbolizing luck and happiness in the new year. YAO, a modern tribute to Cantonese culinary tradition, is creating a canvas to showcase the past, present and future of Cantonese cuisine. For Chinese New Year, YAO will be offering a 6-course tasting menu, priced at $138 per person (minimum two people), as well as its a la carte menu. Highlights include Gold Leaf Wrapped Fried Abalone; Alaskan King Crab Wensi Tofu Soup; Fusilli with Wild Octopus and Bone Marrow; and Fried Rice with Roasted Eel. For Lunar New Year, Figure Eight is offering a large-format Duck Pekin’, the team's take on the classic Pig Pickin' with sides like Sticky Rice, Duck Neck Sausage, Longevity Mac & Cheese, Duck Confit Hoppin' John, Hot Honey Duck Liver Mousse, Cornbread, and more. For dessert, pastry chef Janice Sung will be offering Niangao Yam Pie for Two, with sweet potato, nian gao, taro, jujube anglaise, and pumpkin seed snow. Figure Eight will also be offering Lunar New Year-themed cocktails using traditional liqueurs and flavors like Baijiou, pimento, spicy mandarin, shiso tincture, cacao nib covered citrus, and lemongrass mezcal.

For Lunar New Year, Silver Apricot will be running a special menu with luck & prosperity themed dishes. Examples include House-made 5 Spice Duck Ham with dried persimmon, hot honey mustard, and nasturtium, Pan Fried Longevity Noodles with mushrooms and yellow chives, Lion's Head Meatball in spicy lobster broth, and Mandarin Leaf Ice Cream with orange curd, black sesame, and salted honey. Every table will also receive a hongbao (red envelope) that contains anything from a free beverage, menu item, or dessert, to a $50 gift card for a future visit.

Milu (333 Park Ave South, NYC) will be doing a special Lunar New Year menu, which will be available on Friday, February 9th and Saturday, February 10th. Pre-orders are required. This will be available with limited quantities for dine-in, take-out and delivery. There are two menu options - for 2 people or 4 people:
