“Peter Max: Cosmic Advertising”, a new exhibition that explores the impact and prolific career of Max, who was the most commercially successful pop artist to emerge from the psychedelic period of the 1960s, is now on view at Poster House (119 West 23rd Street) through March 27, 2022
Whether advertising a quirky clothing store or inspiring young minds to read, the imagery present in the graphics on display reveals a designer experimenting with a variety of styles and motifs while also exploring the concepts of space, time, and history through promotional visuals. In his heyday, Max’s fantastical, colorful designs emboldened everything from bed sheets to the body of a Boeing 777.
The museum’s other exhibitions include “The Push Pin Legacy” (through February 6). “You Won’t Bleed Me: How Blaxploitation Posters Defined Cool and Delivered Profits” (through February 6) and “What’s the Score: The Portraits of Leroy Neiman” (through March 27).
