This fall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300–1350, the first major U.S. exhibition dedicated to early Sienese painting. Running from October 13, 2024, to January 26, 2025, the exhibition showcases the groundbreaking contributions of artists like Duccio, Simone Martini, and the Lorenzetti brothers, whose works helped define Western painting at the dawn of the Italian Renaissance. With more than 100 works—including paintings, sculptures, and textiles—the exhibition highlights the profound artistic innovations of Siena before the plague of 1350. It offers rare reunifications of major works, such as the predella of Duccio’s Maestà and Simone Martini’s Orsini Polyptych, offering a once-in-a-lifetime exploration of this influential artistic center. Organized by The Met and The National Gallery, London, the exhibition provides new insights into Siena’s pivotal role in shaping European art.
