Sweeney Todd to Return to Broadway in 2023

Tony Award nominee and pop superstar Josh Groban and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford will both return to Broadway this spring in a new production of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” will begin performances on February 26, 2023 at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (205 W 46th Street)

The show, to be directed by Thomas Kail, features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Hugh Wheeler. Jonathan Tunick will provide orchestrations for the 26-piece orchestra; Alex Lacamoire will serve as music supervisor; and Steven Hoggett will choreograph. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

The landmark musical tells the tale of a resourceful pie shop owner, Mrs. Lovett, and a vengeful barber, now called Sweeney Todd, who are out for blood after he returns to London seeking his long-lost family. The original Broadway production won eight 1980 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
