As live theater begins to return to NYC, this weekly column will keep you up to date on the newest offerings.
“My Cyrano”, a modern improvisational adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play “Cyrano de Bergerac” -- featuring extracts from Tanya Lebedinskaya’s poem “My Cyrano” – is being presented in Russian with English supertitles at The Center at West Park (125 West 86th Street) on June 11 and 12. The show, which blends musical, dance, and theatrical performance, includes music by hard-rock band The Blackfires and Grammy-winning Baroque musician Jordi Savall. The Blackfires’ front man Andrey ‘Cheggi’ Chegodaev leads the cast as Cyrano with Marina Wonder as Roxanne. For tickets and information, visit https://tinyurl.com/2021mycyrano.
The Downtown Urban Arts Festival will feature works from 16 playwrights at the Abron Arts Center (466 Grand Street, New York City) from Thursday, June 10 through Saturday, June 26. For the opening week, works by Sheila Duane, Mel Nieves, Malique Quinn and Alano P. Baez will be presented. Reservations must be made by visiting www.DUAFnyc.com.
In honor of Gay Pride Month, INTAR (500 West 52nd Street) is presenting an outdoor production of “Oso Fabuloso & The Bear Backs!” on June 12 .The show, which has book and lyrics by C. Julian Jiménez with music by P.K. Variance, focuses on a Queer Latino bear named Oso Fabuloso (played by Jimenez), who has recently been dumped by a two-timing daddy bear. In order to overcome his depression, Oso seeks the help of his therapist Dr. Calvo, who convinces him to go on tour and use his gift of song to sing the blues away For tickets and information visit www.intartheatre.org.
Thanks to Vern, a new, improvised two-act musical will be created for four Saturdays this summer, beginning on June 12, at the Players Theater (115 MacDougal Street).
