TOP 12 JANUARY OFF BROADWAY: WINTER TALES

The wind may be howling, the flurries may be blowing, but as always, the show goes on. While only two new Broadway shows bow before March, Off-Broadway remains remarkably busy, bringing both beloved stars and emerging talents to our theatrical stages.

300 Paintings: Back for a second run at the Vineyard Theatre, comedian Sam Kissajukian hilariously and movingly recalls his six-month manic episode, in which he created 300 large-scale paintings, unknowingly documenting his mental state through the process. Beckett Briefs: The Irish Repertory once more salutes the world’s foremost existential dramatist by presenting three of his short plays “Not I,” “Play,” and “Krapp’s Last Tape,” the last featuring Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham. (Through March 9, www.IrishRep.org)

Cymbeline: Will an all femme, all Asian cast of actors be able to solve one of Shakespeare’s famed “problem plays”? What’s the problem? Exile. Infidelity. Deceit. Jealousy. Who could ask for anything more? Come to the Lynn F. Angleson Theatre and find out. (January 18-February 15. www.naatco.org)

Dear Jack, Dear Louise: Famed playwright Ken Ludwig (“Lend Me a Tenor”) tells the story of his parents: a military doctor in Oregon and an aspiring actress in New York City who meet by letter during World War II and are left to navigate the challenges throughout their connection through the written word. Grandiloquent: Stand-up comedian Gary Gulman’s hilarious new show at the Lucille Lortel Theare is about insecurity, empathy, self-acceptance and how a thoughtful boy learned to use humor, reading and writing to cope with the consequences of his parents’ blunders. Henry IV: This acclaimed adaptation of two of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, to be seen at Theatre for a New Audience’s Polonsky Shakespeare Center, is by the brilliant Dakin Matthews, who also takes on the demanding title role. The large cast also features Elijah Jones as Prince Henry, Cara Ricketts as Lady Percy, and the legendary Jay O. Sanders as Sir John Falstaff. (January 26-March 2. www.tfana.org)

International Fringe Encore Theater Series: The SoHo Playhouse continues its celebration of 12 international shows, which represent the diversity of concepts and styles the series’ committee experienced while visiting 11 festivals in 2024. Upcoming highlights includes the much-talked-about “Gwyneth Goes Skiing,” “FAMEHUNGRY” and “The Whisper on the Wind” (Through March 12. www.sohoplayhouse.com)

Kowalski: Television favorites Robin Lord Taylor (“Gotham”) and Brendan Flynn (“13 Reasons Why”) star as Tennessee Williams and Marlon Brando, respectively in Gregg Ostrin’s new play at the Duke on 42nd Street, which transports audiences to a pivotal moment in theatrical history as the pair meet for the first time as Williams crafts “A Streetcar Named Desire” in Provincetown. Mindplay: There’s magic to do at the Greenwich House Theater as Drama Desk Award-nominated mentalist Vinny DePonto leads audiences through an unforgettable, gasp-inducing experience. (Through April 20. www.mindplaynyc.com)

My First Ex-Husband: Comedian and talk-show host Joy Behar has created this comedy, coming the new MMAC Theater (248 West 60th Street), which dives into the messy truths of love, marriage, and divorce, As of now, there are three rotating casts: Behar, Susie Essman, Tovah Feldshuh and Adrienne C. Moore make up the first; future stars include Susan Lucci, Cathy Moriarty, Judy Gold, Veanne Cox, Jackie Hoffman, and Gina Gershon. (Through April 30. www.MyFirstExHusband.com)

The Antiquities: In Jordan Harrison’s new play, being presented at Playwrights Horizons, nine actors take on the roles of post-human beings who are trying to learn what they can from 500 years of civilization, weaving everyday moments into an epic story. Still: Melissa Gilbert and Mark Moses star in Lia Romeo’s play, coming to the Sheen Center, in which they play Helen and Mark, former lovers who are ready to try again but whose differing beliefs may derail their chance at happiness. (January 28-March 23. www.sheencenter.org)
