The Mermaid Inn’s original location in Manhattan’s East Village (96 Second Avenue) will reopen on September 15, more than two years after co-owners Danny Abrams and Cindy Smith closed the beloved seafood restaurant due to the pandemic. “When we decided to give the keys back to the landlord, we thought it was over. To be back makes it feel like we’ve now come full circle,” says Smith.
The eatery is best known for its famed oyster happy hour and such dishes as Lobster Knuckles Escargot Style and Chef Michael Cressotti’s “Nearly Famous Lobster Roll.”
In late October, Abrams and Smith will also open a 550-seat Times Square outpost of The Mermaid Inn at 127 West 43rd Street with Alicart Restaurant Group, which owns and operates Carmine’s and Virgils’ Real Barbecue.
