Halal street food carts are a dime a dozen in New York City. In Midtown you will find them on virtually every corner, sometimes two or three at a time. But there is only one food cart where people are willing to wait up to an hour (maybe two) for a taste and that is Adel’s Famous Halal Food. The team operates two carts with one just slicing its meats.

Specialties include grilled lamb or chicken, falafel, gyros and vegetable platters over rice. The key to its success appears to be the selection of sauces swirling atop each dish ranging from hot sauce to tahini and barbeque.

When you finally make it to the front of the line things move fast. A team of workers jump into action, one filling the rice into the tin, another piling on the meat and yet another squirting on the various sauces.

The result is a gloriously messy plate with lots of meat (this is the lamb) with saffron rice and pita pieces lying beneath all of that sauce. Stick your fork in, swirl it around to around for one glorious bite!

Prices at Adel’s range from $15.50 to $18.50 a plate. Located on the corner of 49th Street and 6th Avenues, Adel’s Famous is located near major New York City tourist attractions such as Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center and Times Square. Open until 5am on weekends.
