There aren’t too many places we’d wait outside on a cold, blustery day for a sandwich, but All’Antico Vinaio, the famous sandwich shop from the Mazzanti family in Florence, Italy, is one of them. The square sandwiches served on freshly baked Tuscan style schiacciata bread are enormous and filled with the freshest of ingredients.
All’Antico, you may recall, emerged as a pop-up a few years back at Otto’s in Greenwich Village. It instantly drew a long line of fans.
The lines have returned, only this time it is a permanent location. During our visit the line extended half way down the block along 8th Avenue near 46th Street. Inside the small shop, with limited counter space for standing, the line curled around the open-air kitchen where two workers, including one with a thick Italian accent, prepared the sandwiches and sliced the fabulous prosciutto found in several of them.
One of the signature sandwiches is the La Schiacciata Del Boss, or simply,”The Boss.” It is filled with thinly sliced Prosciutto Toscano, thick slices of Pecorino Toscano and a layer of truffle cream. It’s an amazing combination.
Equally as amazing is La Summer, a monster of a sandwich filled with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil and extra virgin olive oil. We swapped out the prosciutto for house made porchetta which is out of this world. Vegetarian options include La Caprese made simply with mozzarella, tomato and basil.
We counted nine different sandwiches ranging in price from $9 to $19. One of the workers gave us a thumbs up as we waited on line. But they are the ones that deserve two thumbs up! Bravo!
All'Antico Vinaio is located at 729 8th Ave, New York, NY (917) 970-0033
