Around Town – Gitano Island returns along with pop-ups, pasta, parody and more

Gitano Island returns to Governors Island with its beach-themed club. The lush oasis for food and drinks spans 27,000 square feet lined with giant palm trees and hundreds of tropical plants, as well as stunning views of New York City. It is just 5-minute from downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn via ferry.

Nonna Dora’s Pasta Bar is now open for lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 2:45pm. Guests can now enjoy a bowl of handmade pasta while seeing Dora’s team at work. The a la carte menu as well as daily specials are being offered.

Pearl River Mart is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with its second Sunset Celebration at Chelsea Market. The event kicks off at 6:30 pm, where guests can explore bites and samples from 30+ AAPI restaurants and vendors, and fun products from Gold House’s Founder Network.

At Piggyback Bar in NYC, Chef Leah Cohen will be hosting Chef Kenny Gilbert (who worked as Oprah Winfrey’s personal chef) for a brunch pop-up. Gilbert will be cooking out of his brand new cookbook, Southern Cooking, Global Flavors on May 20th from 11am to 3pm. Reservations via Resy.

Baar Baar will welcome Hannah Che, the chef behind PDX's SURONG for a one-night-only collaboration dinner. The monthly pop-up takes a contemporary approach to Chinese plant-based cuisine, informed by the tenets of Chinese medicine. The 5-course dinner will be held May 15 at 7pm, $115pp (Resy)

The Red Pavilion will host a pop-up market on May 13th from 12-4pm. The event will include a day of shopping, tea parlor teas and dim sum. Those who RSVP will receive 15% off all food & tea on Red Pavilion’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)-inspired menu.

The South Street Seaport Museum will co-host the 1930 Capitán Miranda, a sail training tall ship of the Uruguayan Navy, from May 18 to 21. Throughout the visit, the ship will be docked at the north side of Pier 17, and will offer several free opportunities for the public to come aboard.

The Very Hungry Caterpiller Show has been extended through July 2ND featuring four Eric Carle Stories and 75 magical puppets. Audiences will get a chance to meet colorful characters like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, travel the world with 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and see The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

After completing its 200+ Off-Broadway performances, Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical is holding a one-night-only streaming event on May 27 at 7pm ET. Stranger Sings is a wild and irreverent send-up of the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things" in all of its campy '80s glory through the tale of unsupervised children getting snatched by inter-dimensional creatures. Virtual tickets start at $19.99, with VIP packages including exclusive merch and behind the scenes meet-and-greets.
