Around Town Mexican Independence Day, an Ode to Edna, Mooncakes and more.

This Mexican Independence Day, Tacos Güey is partnering with Las Chingonas Imports for a one night only celebration featuring exclusive new cocktails on September 15th from 6-10 PM.  The Cócteles  include: Nada, Nada Empanada with Lopez Real Mezcal Espadín, Cachaça, Guava, Yogur de Oveja, Brown Butter, Flores Libanesas; and ¡Que Bomba! with Lopez Real Mezcal Espadín, Cola, Limón, Gentian, Sal, Cerveza Negra, and more. To complement the cocktail offerings, Executive Chef Henry Zamora is preparing Suadero Tacos, an off menu special featuring slow roasted brisket and salsa negra.

Tacombi is launching a new Cocktail Menu at select locations and Happy Hour across all of its taquerias.  Tacombi will now offer freshly made Mexican cocktails at its Empire State Building, Flatiron, Williamsburg, and Miami Design District locations, including: Paloma - Tacombi’s take on the beloved Mexican cocktail, made with tequila blanco, fresh grapefruit, agave and soda water; Spiked Hibiscus - a vibrant drink pairing smoky Mezcal with fresh Hibiscus flower, a staple in Mexican cuisine and mixology that has a beautiful, deep red color, among others.  Happy Hour is weekdays 4-7pm.

MIFUNE the Michelin-recognized French-Washoku restaurant in the heart of Midtown East has unveiled its fall menus including a la carte selections for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The menus are the first from Executive Chef Tomohiro “Tomo” Urata, who was named the sole Executive Chef at MIFUNE in June and allow him to showcase his signature style of creatively blending French and Japanese cuisine. Chef Tomo’s a la carte menu features: Pan Seared Turbot, Miso Black Cod, Duck Leg Confit, and Sashimi Three Kinds.

Gage & Tollner is hosting "An Ode to Edna," a first-ever guest chef dinner on Monday, September 19. Chef Lana Lagomarsini (formerly of Blue Hill, Momofuku Ko, Gramercy Tavern) will take over our Edna Lewis private dining room for a Revival Week-themed feast, paying tribute to Miss Edna⁠—the Grand Dame of Southern Cuisine⁠—with beautiful late summer bounty served around a long, communal table. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Edna Lewis Foundation, creating opportunities for African Americans in the fields of cooking, agriculture, food studies, and storytelling.

With the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, approaching on September 10, the Congee Village restaurants (congeenyc.com)  are offering their own handmade mooncakes in elegant boxes and matching gift bags with lantern designs, which are traditional for the festival, symbolizing lighting the path to good fortune and prosperity. The mooncakes, expertly made at the Flushing location and available for pickup at all three restaurants (in Manhattan and Flushing), are sold in boxes of 4 ($35) with a choice of fillings that include lotus seed, winter melon, pineapple and matcha. The mooncakes honor the mythical Chinese moon goddess Chang’e.

Beginning Monday, September 12th, Coco Shack will be Open 7 Days a Week for Lunch & Dinner. Located in the heart of SoHo, the lunch menu features things like grilled or roasted oysters, avocado toast & Smoked salmon, and beer-battered fish & chips.  Dinner brings soft shell crab tempura, spaghettini with clams and chiles, and lobster-filled, saffron-red pepper ravioli.

Talea Beer Co. is hosting a Beer & Tie-Dye Workshop on Sunday, September 11th, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring additional items from home to dye - up to 2 additional small items made of 50% or more of natural fibers (cotton, silk, hemp, wool, rayon). For Rosh Hashanah, Chef Einat Admony at Balaboosta is offering a celebratory meal that is available for dine-in or pickup (via preorder) on September 25 - full menu is below.   Pre-ordered pickup dinners for 3-4 persons can be purchased through the Balaboosta website and may be picked up between 12:00 - 2:30 PM on 9/25.  If you would like to celebrate at Balaboosta, the restaurant has limited Prix Fixe tickets available for purchase on Resy for groups of 3-20 guests.  The menu includes Honey & Apples for the blessing, Hummus with lemon tahini and green s’chug, Braised Fish with olives and roasted red peppers, and more.
