Bar Marseille opens in the Rockaways
September 29, 2020, 12:02.33 pm ET
Bar Marseille, from the Civetta Hospitality Group, is now open in the Rockaways. The restaurant occupies ground level and rooftop spaces inside The Tides at Arverne by the Sea, a new luxury beachfront apartment complex, and offers picturesque ocean views of the nearby shores. Bar Marseille, which borrows its name from the famed port city of Marseille in Southern France, celebrates the eclectic collection of flavors that is found along the French Riviera with cultural influences of North Africa, Italy, Greece, and Spain. There is indoor dining and an outdoor patio (each 75 seats), and a rooftop area with an additional 50 seats.
The fare is French bistro-inspired with strong coastal influences that focus on seafood. Bar snacks include Deviled Eggs with crispy shrimp, capers, tarragon; Grilled Oysters with smoked butter, dulse; and Crispy Artichokes with gribiche aioli. From the raw bar comes Oysters with sparkling rose mignonette; Smoked Trout Salad with Meyer lemon aioli; Moules Frites with fennel, white wine, and pastis; and Beef Tartare with long hot peppers, capers, cornichons, and endive. Entrees include Fish en Papillote with steelhead trout, miso butter, and asparagus; the Marseille Tuna Burger, Steak Frites with caper aioli, red wine butter and guests’ choice of cut; and Grilled Pork Chop with butternut squash and sage.
The beverage program celebrates French spirits and liqueurs. cocktails range from Magic in the Moonlight (Aviation gin, green chartreuse, lavender, egg white, and lime) to the Midnight Party (Bacardi rum, lillet blanc, grand marnier, pastis, and lemon). ; Evil Under the Sun - Espolon reposado, creme de cassis, ginger beer, lime. Old world wines from all over the South of France are also highlighted.
The bright and airy space was designed in collaboration with Studio Mapos, with nods to the eclectic port city of Marseille and the natural simplicity of the French Riviera. A playful pastel color palette anchors the space with Matisse and Picasso-inspired cutout murals on each wall in creamsicle orange, mint green, sky blue, and blush pink. A floating custom steel and glass shelf is positioned around the bar, meant to create a focal point for the restaurant which is topped with a deep blue marble alongside tamboured wooden panels. The space is outfitted with lots of tropical plants and greenery, and adorned with textured wall hangings.
