Forget the outside world when you enter Grandma’s Home, an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. An import from China, the restaurant has a zen-like atmosphere where the food and space appear in perfect harmony.

We stopped in for lunch which feels more like a complete meal. Each lunch set comes with pickled cucumbers, choy sum, and white rice. Guest have a pick between two appetizers, lotus root with sticky rice or tofu skin rolls. For a main course there is Chili Pepper Chicken (seen here), Sweet & Sour Pork, Steam Fish Filet with tofu and Mapo Tofu. Other lunch options include Grandma’s Beef Noodle Soup and a Kung Pao Chicken bowl.

The Chili Pepper Chicken lives up to its name providing plenty of heat from chilies and sprays of fresh green peppercorns, still on the stem, something we’ve never seen before. It is quite a treat.

Tea service is also offered, in flavors like chamomile, which can be enjoyed by two or more guests. For more choices there is a lengthy all-day a la carte menu. This is one grandma’s home you won’t want to miss. -T.R.
