Masalawala & Sons Opens in Park Slope

Now open in Park Slope, Masalawala & Sons (365 5th Avenue) is a restaurant and retail shop celebrating the foods of Kolkata (the capital of India's West Bengal state), along with other regional Indian food, The full-service, full-bar space also offers a variety of beers, wines and specialty cocktails. It seats 30 people indoors and about 30 in the backyard.
Chef Chintan Pandan’s menu includes such starters as a Sabudana Vada (tapioca pearl and potato fritter), Methi na Gota (fenugreek and gram flour fritter), and Dahi Vada (fearmented lentil dumpling drenched in spiced yogurt and chutney).
Other notable dishes include Daab Chingri, a Bengali prawn curry that’s cooked then served in a young coconut, Saoji Chicken, a fiercely spicy dish from the Vidarbha region in central India, Biyebarir Butter Fish Fry, a crispy batter-fried fish with kasundi, Bharli Vargi, baby eggplants cooked in a coconut masala, and Ripon Street Majja, which is bone marrow in a ginger chili blend, topped with an egg.
